From the ledge that is the sweet little rear spoiler of this car:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I’m seriously considering selling my beloved blue E46 wagon and just using our XC70 for daily driving / kid hauling / family trip duties. I’ve always wanted a V70R but somewhat feared the maintenance, and also haven’t been able to find one that was reasonably priced and also not on its 4th owner, no doubt having been hooned to death by at least two of those owners.
Pros:
no rust
low mileage
appears to be well-maintained
not in perfect condition so I wouldn’t feel bad putting kids in it (it looks like the back seat is indented from car seats already)
price will probably not be sky-high partly because of the remote location
I have a friend who is local to the car who could look at it and/or help me with transporting it
i f we sold the XC70 and my E46 wagon I’d have money leftover to address any current or immediate future issues with the R
i t’s an amazing color
Cons:
because it’s on BaT the price will probably still be well above “market” although with a car like this, that’s a little squishy
it’s a 12-year-old high(ish)-strung Volvo that will still have some complex and expensive repairs in its future no matter what
speaking of that, at 12 years old, there will be some rubber and plastic bits that are ready to quit regardless of the low mileage
buying a car without having even driven it with the intention of replacing a known-well-maintained old bmw and a perfectly good sensible Volvo with the intention of relying on the unknown car as a DD is probably ill-advised
Even with the help of a friend it would be close to $2k to get that car to the US East Coast
Ugh, it’s the automatic.
I’m still intrigued. If this car sells for under $10k I’ll be a little upset with myself for not having bid on it. If it gets over $15k I’ll be happy not to be into it for $17k. This is a tough one for me. I am not kidding that if it were a manual I’d be placing my first BaT bid very soon.

It will sell for north of $15,000

Just keep watching it - that’s what I did with a Z4M that appeared to be heading for a suspiciously cheap hammer. I did a bit of research and set myself a number I was comfortable with and in the closing minutes of the auction saw that number surpassed by about $2k. If it had hit the timer and was still below my budget, I’d have bid (again), but didn’t even quite make it there.

I hope you’re right. I know people tend to bid at the end, but it’s got a long way to go. It’s far from perfect but it’s also so rare and wagon-y that maybe...

I’m watching and even have a reminder set. There are just so few of these around... the number I set is really only in my head.
Almost 5 years ago I drove a 2006 V70R manual with 150k miles that needed some work, but was pretty nice and overall accident-free. They wanted $18k for it. I walked.

Other Oppo s with Volvo wagons enjoying their cars.
Really good hood struts on a Volvo. Lot’s of room to work!

Hey isn’t there someone here with a teal one that’s never had major issues? Haven’t seen him around in a while... hmm

A blue Volvo wagon? No help from me. I’d like to own it too.
There’s a reason I don’t torture myself by going on to BaT.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 14:30 |

Damn right. I love the cars, but owners on here and elsewhere make me thing that owning a Volvo is a good way to bankrupt yourself

I passed on a V70R to get the Allroad.

It’s on BaT so there’s so many eyes on it.

The common thought is that you need to plan on about $2,000 a year for maintenance for the P2 R’s.
There is a cooler (and probably more rare) car for sale on swedespeed. 2001 T5 Manual. FWD but it’s just a few mods away from making big horsepower.

Our greenish V50? Just got its ECU reflashed after a few no start instances, but my brother’s now happily bumbling about in it at about 160k miles!

lol at the tag. too true.
automatic = automatic crack pipe for me, especially something that old.

Oof. I suppose I should be happy you didn’t get a picture of my other Volvo leaving on a flatbed too....
(edit) Ahh what the hell. Someone's got to keep the tow industry above water

looks pretty right to me, interior looks good IMO. If the material on the drivers seat is supple a simple sew will fix that. Even in the right hands those car seat marks can come out. If you buy it and your in the Mid-Atlantic region look me up...

Yeah but that S6 wagon (that ends in less than 2 hours)

I'd own it! If your budget is 15 and you can pick it up for 10, then go for it. Just save the extra 5.

Remember I bought a Mexican-built VW GLI becaue no matter how hard I tried to justify a V70R in my mind, I couldn’t pull the trigger. I want one so bad, but I will just covet one from afar because I know it would just hurt me. If you know that you’ll be in for a future of angle gear rebuilds, driveshaft replacements, 4C strut replacements, suspension bushings, possible headgasket and cylinder issues, etc., etc., then go for it. Those in the know say to budget at least $2k immediately for a “stage zero” (catching up on deferred maintenance and replacing worn parts to bring it back to factory) and about $2k/year for annual maintenance. If this is all okay, go for it and enjoy a wonderful car. If it keeps killing your wallet, sell me your truck to pay for it. :)

haha yeah... I think I’d have to budget $2k for repairs and hope to come out ahead (?!) - I’m ok with that part. But I think the inconvenience might kill me.
But oh those 5 cylinder turbo sounds...
![]() 05/28/2019 at 19:32 |

And I already have one, not to mention this is the second one my wife and I have had, the R would be the 3rd.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 19:33 |

I might have been okay with it if I didn’t have a pile of other project cars. I need a reliable daily that I don’t have to do anything to.
Those 5-cylinder sounds make me weak at the knees. :)

Nice! That’s not the one I’m thinking of though, there’s a seafoam (?) green V70R around here somewhere.

I’m in the northeast. Car seat marks don’t bother me because step 1 after buying the car would be: install car seats. I use a blanket and cardboard to keep from marking my seats for the most part, but it still happens.
Giving up a solid, reliable daily (actually two) to get this car seems like a bad idea, but it does depend on the price.

I test drove a few while I was shopping. It was that much harder to give up on my R dreams after driving them!
![]() 05/28/2019 at 19:45 |

That’s right! I just think of that color as a bit mintier :D
![]() 05/28/2019 at 19:45 |

That could be my savior. I’m not sure I could help myself if it was manual.
![]() 05/28/2019 at 19:47 |

save the extra 5
... to replace the 4C suspension with coilovers and replace the angle gear when I smoke it hooning the shit out of it in the snow...
![]() 05/28/2019 at 19:55 |

Holy shit for $5k I’m not sure you could do much better, Volvo or otherwise.
Now, see... we should have held out and gotten something like that when we bought our 2012 XC70. It was priced right and had all the right options and configuration, but I might have been better off finding a rare, clean, manual V70. Now I wouldn’t be “unnecessary car shopping” when I still have both the BMW and the other Volvo haha.

oh yes, I often try to talk people out of buying boats.

Yes. Don’t buy one.

I never had to tow my E46 anywhere. Now it didn’t have heat for like 2-3 years but still.
![]() 05/29/2019 at 09:24 |

ha! oh I could not live without heat. I used it this morning! In 10 years of E46 ownership I’ve only used a tow truck once (so far, fingers crossed!) and it probably could have been driven, in hindsight - it was a broken rear trailing arm and I only took it about 1/2 mile to a local shop.
